Adam Schefter brings concerning news regarding Packers and Jordan Love contract extension talks
Wm. Glasheen USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin

The Green Bay Packers and quarterback Jordan Love are already negotiating a contract extension. But that doesn’t mean it will happen anytime soon. ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter went on “Jen, Gabe, and Chewy Show” on ESPN Milwaukee, and he said the parties are not close to a deal.

The Jared Goff parameters

When the Detroit Lions agreed to a deal on Monday with Jared Goff, that established a floor for what Love might get. According to Schefter, the Packers’ quarterback will most likely surpass his division rival.

“I think his number would go above it, and that is if a deal gets done. The longer the Packers wait, the more difficult it will be for them and the better it will be for Jordan Love. That's my own opinion,” Schefter said. “I would come to Jordan Love with a strong cash offer, a lot of guaranteed money, it's easy for me to say. The average, let's say, $51 million, $52 million. Do you think that number is going down any after Jared Goff's average comes into $53 million? I'm gonna have to see the structure, but I guess he's not gonna take less than Jared Goff. Now, there are potential deals there for Trevor Lawrence, maybe Matthew Stafford, Tua Tagovailoa if that deal gets done, Dak Prescott is still out there. The numbers on these deals don't go down, they just don't.”

When will it get done?

Jordan Love has only one season as a full-time starter, but at the same time the short-term extension he signed last offseason is coming to an end. This is the last year of his deal, and it would be ideal to find an agreement before they needed to use a franchise tag.

“It'll be up to (Packers executive vice president/director of football operations) Russ Ball to see if he can get this deal done. I don't think they're anything close to getting it done right now. Those are conversations that will occur here in the days and weeks to come,” Schefter added. “I still think the most likely course of action is that the two sides will figure out a way to get a deal done.”

Alternatives

If the Packers and Jordan Love can’t find a way to sign a long-term extension, the quarterback would play out his contract in 2024 making $11 million — and counting $12.7 against the salary cap. That’s obviously great value for Green Bay, but would force them to possibly franchise tagging Love a year from now.

“If the Packers don't step up and come up with an offer that Jordan Love thinks is reasonable, if Jordan Love wants more than the Packers are willing to offer, if one side or another is unable to get this particular deal done, and it doesn't get done, then Jordan Love goes into the last year of his contract. So if they don't get something done and he plays this year without an extension, then they would have the ability after this year to tag him if they want it,” Schefter mentioned. “You don't want to go down that road, you'd rather not have to do that, you'd want this deal done sooner rather than later. But if it doesn't get done, they can't figure it out, they have the tag available. It's not like he's walking out the door in free agency next year, that's not happening.”

Presumably, both sides want to get an extension done before training camp. For the Packers, it gives them security to build around their franchise quarterback. And for Love, he avoids a potential scenario where he gets hurt or his play regresses, which could affect his market value.
